- refusal of stopping the locomotives by the transport service;
- long immobilization time due to lack of spare parts.
- many missing parts on the locomotives.
- inefficient workload planning in the workshop.
- overload of nominated repair due to locomotive damage.
The repair methods are often out-dated and not adapted to modern exploitation of diesel
locomotives due to lack of information and training. The workshop has been built for
overhaul and repair steam locomotives. The lay- out is outdated and needs to be
re-designed taking into account the needs of present and future diesel locomotive repair.
So, in 1991/92 Myanmar railways implemented the Action Oriented Assistance to Myanmar
Railways project. Assistance had been given by UNDP and some twinning arrangements with
Transurb Consultants from Belgium hand been completed with a view of upgrading the various
disciplines of the railways using existing resources. This project also include the
restructuring the lay out of Insein locomotives workshop. But machine tools are very old.
More than 72% has more than 40 years. Only 16% is younger than 10 years. 5% of the machine
tools are not operable.
The Ywataung workshop was built especially for the repair of diesel hydraulic
locomotives. The buildings are in good condition, accessibility of shops and stores is
good and machine tools are young & in good condition. Some machine tools and equipment
cannot be used due to lack of information ? & training lack of facilities and lack of
spare parts. Sonic specialized machines me not available.
